does my blog's domain authority affect how my pins rank or are they totally separate systems

Alex Morgan

Site is nine months old with essentially no backlinks. A competitor with a much stronger domain in the same niche outranks me on Pinterest for every keyword we both target. I'd assumed that's just four years of engagement data doing its thing, but someone told me confidently that Pinterest weights domain quality directly when ranking pins. Is there anything behind that or is it SEO people assuming Pinterest works like Google?

Separate systems for ranking, but not fully independent. Pinterest has its own opinion about whether a domain is good, and that opinion is built almost entirely out of what happens on Pinterest — do people click through, do they immediately bounce back, does the page match what the pin promised. Your DR is irrelevant to that. Their four years of that behaviour is extremely relevant.

Related thing worth knowing since people still get this wrong: outbound links from pins don't pass link equity, so "Pinterest for backlinks" has been dead for years. Traffic yes, authority no. Doesn't answer your question but it kills the assumption underneath it.

Nine months old, no backlinks, competing with a four year old account. That's your answer and you don't need a domain-authority theory to explain it.
