what i check before panicking about a traffic drop, in order

Alex Morgan

Posting this because I have watched three people this month rebuild their entire strategy over what turned out to be a reporting lag.

  • compare the outbound click drop to the impression drop, because if clicks held up then the reach you lost was junk
  • search one of my own pin titles logged out in a private window to see if I still rank
  • check GA referral traffic rather than Pinterest analytics, since they disagree constantly and only one of them pays
  • confirm the date range in the dashboard did not quietly reset on me
  • then sit on my hands for 14 days

The GA one is the step everybody skips. Pinterest analytics and GA have never once agreed on my account and GA is the number that matters.

I would add checking whether your own site is the problem. I had a drop that turned out to be a firewall rule on my host blocking their crawler after a migration. Nothing to do with the algorithm at all.
