What I do during the June-August slump instead of refreshing analytics

Olivia James

Fifth summer doing this. Every year my traffic falls off a cliff around mid-June and every year I briefly believe I've been penalised. I haven't. It's just summer.

My rough approach now: June is for building the Q4 backlog, July I start seeding back-to-school and early autumn, August I'm already publishing holiday. By the time the busy stretch arrives the work is done and I'm coasting. Curious how others use the quiet months.

Same shape here. I also use June to go back through the previous 12 months and rewrite the posts that got close to ranking and didn't. It's the only time of year I have the patience for it.

one small thing that helped me: i stopped comparing june to may and started comparing june to last june. year over year my summers have gone up every year. month over month they look like a disaster every single time. same data, completely different emotional experience

Mild disagreement on "it's just summer" — it is for most niches, but not all. Travel and outdoor stuff peaks in summer. Anything wedding-adjacent peaks in engagement season and again in spring. If your traffic drops in June and your niche is summer-weighted, that's not seasonality, that's a problem worth investigating.
